Sometimes when a student exhibits above average academic abilities they can experience deficits in other areas. While not all gifted children struggle with executive functioning skills they are more likely to experience difficulties. Executive functioning skills can often be masked until the middle grades in high ability and gifted students. These skills include:
How to STUDY (in the younger grades they are often able to get away without studying because academics comes easily but as they get into middle school they are then lacking this skill) How to ORGANIZE their materials (folders, binders, lockers, organizing papers, writing down assignments, taking notes etc.) How to PRIORITIZE (staying focused and time management for school work) How to PARTICIPATE in class appropriately (without being demeaning to teachers or peers) How to maintain mental IMPULSE CONTROL (instead of blurting out whatever comes to mind) Click on the link for more information: Tips for Parents: Executive Functioning at Home and School |
